Learning Outcomes

  • Next generation beneficiaries are often beneficiaries of a 30 year plus "one-size-fits-all" structure, which may not necessarily be appropriate for their current lifestyle – the structure may need to be modified;
  • The next generation of beneficiaries will often increase the pool of beneficiaries, which in turn has the potential to dilute the wealth available under the structure – expectations will need to be managed carefully;
  • With an increase in the pool of beneficiaries, the interests of next generation beneficiaries may not be aligned – competing interests will need to be appropriately and compassionately accommodated, especially if "second families" are involved;
  • The benefits of a global outlook frequently results in next generation beneficiaries wishing a proportion of the trust fund to be held in ethical investments and/or made available for philanthropic purposes – this approach requires, amongst other things, an agile investment philosophy;
  • The age of increasingly available and instant information leads to next generation beneficiaries challenging service providers on the ongoing administration of structures – the service providers need to engage with the next generation.
